The History Of Electric Boat Motors.
Electric boat motors have had a rocky history. They have been around for quite some time, but have had ups and downs in their popularity. Boaters today, however, are coming to once again respect everything that these motors have to offer. Combined with the ever growing concern over the environment, electric motors may just be seeing a comeback.
The beginning of electric boat motors goes back over 100 years. They are definitely not a new product. At the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois the first electric boat motor was offered commercially. Before that in 1880 a French inventor named Gustave Trove invented the first electric powered boat motor. Boaters loved the quiet operation of these motors and the fact that they required less maintenance than other motors on the market. The beginnings of the electric motor could be seen around the world as more electric motors were being used than any other kind.
After its introduction many recreational boats were cruising around using electric motors. This popularity didn't last long though, by the 1920's gasoline powered engines had taken over. This take over is often contributed to the invention and introduction of gasoline powered vehicles by Henry Ford. Gasoline also offered higher speeds and more convenience than the electric motors. Gasoline motors could easily be refueled and boaters were back on the water quickly. This revolution almost meant the end for electric boat motors.
In the 1970's people started becoming more aware of the impact of gasoline and emissions on the environment. Electric motors were beginning their comeback. Technology has also led to more interest in electric motors. New ideas have brought about change in the speed and convenience of electric motors. There are onboard chargers that provide the battery with power and the capabilities for speed have been raised as batteries offer more power today than ever before. These changes, in addition to the rising cost of fuel, have made electric motors more attractive to boaters.
Electric boats motors were once the prime boat motor that was used. Throughout history, electric motors have been at the top and fell hard to the bottom of the industry. With technology and concerns over the cost, both in money and environment, of gasoline motors, electric motors are seeing a rise in popularity once again. These motors have never been cast away and it seems they may enjoy a ride as the preferred boat motor once again in the near future.
